PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 58-year-old suffered a serious eye injury after a gun was fired at a Pottstown Wawa gas station Monday morning. Police say he was an innocent bystander.
Pottstown police say a 37-year-old man had a domestic incident with his girlfriend at their home in Lower Pottsgrove over the weekend.
As he was fueling up a work truck at the Wawa on East High Street at about 8:15 a.m. Monday, police say the girlfriend’s 19-year-old son and another person attacked the 37-year-old.
Investigators say based on surveillance video, as the 37-year-old backed away from the assault, he pulled a gun and fired one shot into the ground.
The 58-year-old was walking across the parking lot when he was hit in the face and eye by shrapnel from the ricochet. That man was flown to a trauma center.
The 37-year-old who fired the gun called 911, stayed on scene and waited for police. They say he has a legal concealed carry permit.
The 19-year-old who police say attacked the man took off before police got there.
Pottstown police said investigators are looking at video and interviewing witnesses, and they are working with the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office to decide who should be charged.
