PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police don't know who fired the stray bullet that struck a pregnant woman in the stomach Wednesday night in Kensington. She is in critical condition, and her baby is alive.
The 39-year-old woman's family told police she was nine-months pregnant when she was shot. Police took her to Temple University Hospital for surgery. Authorities say an emergency cesarean section was needed to delivery her baby.
Investigators say the woman was at the doorway of a home on 1800 East Atlantic Street, in the area close to Kensington and Glenwood avenues, around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, when shots rang out and the bullet struck her.
Police are trying to piece together what happened.
“We don’t have a description of the shooter or shooters from the family. They said they didn’t even see anyone fire the shots. They just heard the gunshot,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said on the scene.
There have been no arrests nor any weapons recovered. Police plan to look at surveillance video from that area.
