PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A new Michael Schulson pizza restaurant is opening this weekend in Philadelphia’s Midtown Village.

Culinary director Ed Pinello said they refurbished the building that used to be Zavino, another pizza restaurant at 13th and Sansom streets, into what is now Prunella.

Patrons will notice “the big purple pizza oven and also the beautiful bar that we have, which is substantially bigger than it was before,” said Pinello. “And it’s just very beautiful. The back bar is beautiful.”

Prunella is named after the northern Italian herb that’s used in a lot of different vermouths and digestifs, “a cure-all herb,” he said.

While the restaurant is Italian, Pinello stressed that the pizza is American.

“We’re not doing Neapolitan-style dough. This is really an American-style pizza,” he said.

And what goes well with pizza? Wine.

“We have two wines on tap, which are really great,” said Pinello, “and that should make it quick and easy and always cold.”
