PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A young Philadelphia man will spend at least 17 years in prison after pleading guilty earlier this year to third-degree murder in the shooting death of a teenager on a SEPTA platform.

Tyshaun Welles, 16, was shot in the head while waiting for a train on the westbound platform of 15th Street Station on Jan. 11, 2024.

Witnesses told police they saw two people talking at the end of the platform around 9:30 p.m. when one of them pulled a gun and fired into a crowd of people, striking Welles. He died a week later.

Quadir Humphrey, then 18, and Zaire Wilson, then 16, were arrested after the shooting. The two were charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, conspiracy and related offenses. But the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office withdrew charges against Wilson in March after evidence showed he was not involved in the shooting.

Humphrey pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, tampering with evidence, obstruction of justice and a firearms charge a few months ago.

He was sentenced Friday to 17 ½ to 45 years in prison.
