PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The getaway driver in the 2022 shooting death of a Philadelphia sanitation worker was sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison Thursday.
Authorities say 33-year-old Rasheen Trusty drove Nurshar Scott around the morning of Nov. 18, 2022. Trusty was on the phone, coordinating with someone to locate 35-year-old Philadelphia sanitation worker Ikeem Johnson.
While Johnson drove a garbage truck along its route in the city’s Mayfair section, Scott got out of the car in a face mask near Bleigh and Rowland avenues, stalked Johnson, and shot him while Trusty stayed nearby with the car.
Bob Wainwright, chief of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s homicide unit, said Trusty played an integral role in the murder — before, during and after.
“He follows Nurshar Scott after Nurshar Scott is running, having committed the murder with two different guns, having shot Akeem Johnson many times. Scott flees, and Rasheen Trusty follows him in the car, picks him up, takes him back to the same apartment complex where they began their day together,” Wainwright said.
Trusty’s phone was tracked going to and from the scene. Scott’s phone stayed at the apartment.
During Thursday’s sentencing hearing, Johnson’s mother told the judge she just wanted justice for her son.
At the sentencing hearing, Trusty’s attorney noted he ran an at-home health care business and has two children. In addition to his sentencing, the judge ordered Trusty to undergo anger management treatment, vocational training and parenting classes.
Scott was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year.
