PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Travelers through 30th Street Station can see a recreation of a 9/11 memorial that toured the country 25 years ago.
The original memorial consisted of panoramas of the rescue effort at Ground Zero. It was created by Amtrak engineer Jim Audley and photographer Bill Keokosky, who traveled to New York in the hours after the attacks.
The photographs depict the desperate but unified effort to rescue people from the rubble of the World Trade Center.
"We wanted to share the way our country came together to work to try to find survivors,” Audley said. “[Bill] was able to digitally stitch them together and create these panoramas and put them on this reflective vinyl material so that we could share this experience with other people."
Audley said the memorial was first displayed at 30th Street Station in October 2001, and then traveled to Amtrak stations nationwide.
"We just felt a responsibility to do what we could do as Americans to do what we could do to help initially, and then to share what had happened so that America understood what had happened," Audley said.
A recreation of that original memorial, titled “September 12,” is on display at 30th Street through Sept. 18.
