PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Pennsylvania SPCA recently rescued 73 Chihuahuas and one Rottweiler mix from a Kensington row home over concerns for their welfare.
The good news is the owner signed over the animals to the PSPCA, and when the dogs are ready, they can be offered up for adoption instead of waiting for court proceedings to wrap up.
Wilson says some of the Chihuahuas will be on the adoption floor this week looking for a new family that matches their personality.
“Fortunately, the owner did agree to surrender all the dogs so at least we don’t have to house them pending a criminal case,” said Nicole Wilson, PSPCA director of animal law enforcement and shelter operations. “So our medical team went about doing the forensic observation on the animals. And then, as we need them medically and behaviorally appropriate, we will make them available for adoption.”
Potential adopters can meet some of the pooches at the PSPCA’s North Philadelphia shelter starting Tuesday at noon. The Rottweiler mix’s temperament is still being accessed, so the animal is not ready for adoption at this time.
Wilson says, if the dogs aren’t a fit for your home at this time, there are plenty of others looking for a home.
“You know, 73 Chihuahuas and a Rottie mix is a lot for any organization to handle. I think that whether you can adopt this animal or a different animal in the future, the key is to look to your shelter to adopt, because that in and of itself, is an act that prevents animal cruelty and neglect in the future.”
The PSPCA’s adoption floor is open to the public starting at noon, seven days a week.
