PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newradio) -- A major road construction project along a section of Route 322, the Conchester Highway in southwestern Delaware County, has just wrapped up.

PennDOT’s Brad Rudolph said it’s been quite a transformation during the past two and a half years seeing the road go from a two-lane highway to four lanes.

"You’re looking at about a 2.5-mile section that’s been widened and improved, new signals, re-aligned interchanges. Replaced the two bridges over Webb Creek and the SEPTA lines and over Smithbridge Road," he explained.

"It’s a very heavily traveled, east-west suburban artery. Tens of thousands of motorists use it every day to get to many points from all the way up in Chester County through Delaware County, and all the way down to 95."

Rudolph said road planners had no idea of the kind of growth that would eventually happen in Concord Township.

"When the roadway was built, it wasn’t intended for this much traffic to ride on it," he said. "And, due to growth and development, it’s very heavily relied on."

This stretch of the Conchester Highway runs between Route 1, Baltimore Pike and Clayton Park Drive.

"It’s been one heckuva project but it’s one piece in many that we’re looking to improve the corridor with," Rudolph said.

He said there are three other phases of reconstruction work and improvements set for the corridor which will be spaced out over the coming years.
