NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Authorities say two U.S. Army Reserve members helped stop an attempted carjacking in Camden County.

Prosecutors say a man, identified as 45-year-old Rondean McDonald, drove his car off Jackson Road Thursday morning and crashed into the surrounding woods before getting out and allegedly attempting to carjack a 59-year-old woman driving by.

Police say McDonald ripped the locked passenger door open, got inside the car, and demanded the woman take him out of the area. When the woman refused McDonald’s demands, authorities say he began strangling her.

That’s when officials say the military members — one of whom is a Philly cop — drove by, noticed the assault and intervened, using a fire extinguisher to break the passenger side window. They were able to remove McDonald before restraining him.

Officials say others who drove by called 911.

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.

McDonald is at the Camden County Correctional Facility. He faces a slew of charges, including carjacking, kidnapping and aggravated assault.

A court date is pending.
