PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Officials at Rowan University are conducting an investigation into a racial slur that a student said was written on her door over the weekend.

The incident happened at the Holly Pointe Commons residence hall, just 11 days after students moved in.

"On one of the decorations, there was a racial slur," Rowan University Vice President of University Relations Joe Cardona told NBC10.

"She took it down, but she's reporting that when she came back, it was written again."

Rowan University Police and other officials are looking into the matter.

"At Rowan, there is absolutely no room for discrimination or harassment, whether written or spoken," Rowan University Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students Kevin Koett said in a letter to students after the incident.

"Words matter and can be weaponized to intimidate and cause harm."

Officials urge anyone with information on whoever is responsible to report the incident, so the university can take swift action against the perpetrator.

"We have some good evidence. There are cameras throughout the building," Cardona said.

Cardona added that possible consequences for the perpetrator would differ, based on if they are a Rowan student or a visitor who would subsequently be banned from campus. A student could face various punishments, from parental notification to expulsion.

Tips about the incident can be submitted anonymously to Rowan University Police via their Crime Tip Line at 856-256-7428 or on the university's Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion website.

Rowan University this month received a national award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine for Higher Education Excellence in Diversity.

The university holds mandatory implicit bias training for its staff and faculty among numerous steps its Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion takes for the campus community.
