PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Drivers no longer have to worry about a section of the Schuylkill Expressway being shut down this weekend. Interstate 76 is back open eastbound just after the Grays Ferry Avenue exit.

This was the first of four weekends the section of expressway was supposed to be closed for bridge repair.

A PennDOT spokesperson tells NBC10 it's because the asphalt that was supposed to be used for the construction didn't test as well as they thought, and they didn't want to use "inferior" material.

However, PennDOT still plans to close that portion of I-76 next weekend for the project, starting at 9 p.m. Friday.
