CHESTER, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Authorities in Delaware County have called off the search for a young girl who fell into the Chester Creek over the weekend.
Crews searched since Saturday for 6-year-old Li’Najah Brooker, after she slipped and fell into the creek while playing after the intense rainstorm across the area.
Scent dogs were called in on Tuesday to help with recovery efforts. They alerted crews to an area of the creek near Seventh Street — but the search turned up empty.
Chester Fire Commissioner John Paul Shirley said they exhausted all options. “I don’t think there’s any other resources available to us to do this search,” he said. “We’ve used everything we can.”
Sonar and an underwater drone were also used, and divers went into the water, but in the end, the girl was not found.
The girl’s family say there are questions about holes in the fence, at the park where Li’Najah was playing, that could have allowed the girl to get too close to the creek.
“There might be some areas of that fence [that are] compromised,” said Chester Mayor Stefan Roots, “and that’s something we can’t accept.
