PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Starting next month, SEPTA will change the names of some of its bus routes from letters to numbers.
When SEPTA’s spring schedule comes out on Feb. 23, six of its bus routes with letter designations will be renamed with numbers. Route G, for example, becomes the 63; the H becomes the 71; the J becomes the 41; the L becomes the 51; the R becomes the 82; and the XH becomes the 81.
To minimize confusion, both the letter and number will appear on timetables and bus signage.
“This isn’t a change in the service that they get every day,” assured SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch. “This is just a change to the designation of the bus route.”
It’s all part of SEPTA’s effort to rebrand and simplify the names of its services.
The K bus, however, will remain the same for now, as SEPTA expects to change that route as part of its redesigned bus network, dubbed Bus Revolution. Route changes under the new network are on hold until late spring, Busch said, pending the availability of state funding.
If there’s enough money, changes to the routes will be implemented in August.
