PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA police shot a man who authorities say is responsible for killing a 20-year-old woman Tuesday morning in South Philadelphia.
This morning's shooting comes just one day after a deadly shooting on a subway train in Spring Garden, where a 21-year-old man was shot 11 times throughout his body.
Police say the incident began around 8 a.m. at Broad and Ellsworth Streets, where the woman was shot 10 times throughout her body. She died at the hospital.
Sources say the victim was walking to her job at Target from the 3rd police district headquarters, where she had filed a protection from abuse order against her ex-boyfriend. The suspect then confronted her and continuously shot her, at one point, firing as she lay on the ground.
According to officials, two SEPTA officers on patrol at the Broad Street Line's Ellsworth-Federal Station heard the gunfire and rushed up to street level. That's where they say they saw the suspected gunman enter a vehicle and drive off.
Police say he ditched the car two blocks away near South 11 Street. There then was a brief foot pursuit which led to an exchange of gunfire between officers and the gunman. The officers identified the suspect was using a black semi-automatic handgun.
The 41-year-old suspect was struck once in the shoulder and leg. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition and was placed under arrest.
Sources say he has a record, including two protection from abuse order violations, as well as assault and gun charges.
Murder charges are expected to be filed.
