TIMELINE: Severe storm strikes Philadelphia area and Jersey shore

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Severe storms have come through metropolitan Philadelphia and the Jersey shore on Thursday evening, leading to tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings being issued around the area. The following is a timeline of the events as they have happened.

6:17 p.m.
A downed tree on U.S. 1 was part of the damage from the storm.


6:05 p.m.
The Jersey shore community was being most heavily hit at the moment, as the storm has passed through Philadelphia. Ocean City toward the north Jersey beaches had the greatest possibility of major damage from the storm, according to NBC10 meteorologist Steven Sosna.

An NBC10 viewer from Tullytown in Bucks County revealed what storm clouds looked like as they came through.

5:49 p.m.
Flooding began to strike during the late Thursday night rush hour on the freeway system.

One person shared his view of storm clouds in Cape May.

5:36 p.m.
A tornado warning was issued for parts of Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties.

5:29 p.m.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for much of the Jersey shore.

5:10 p.m.
The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for parts of Bucks, Burlington and Mercer counties.

4:58 p.m.
The Philadelphia Phillies had to cancel their game Thursday night against Miami at Citizens Bank Park. It was to be rescheduled for July 16.

3:14 p.m.
The first major storm warning came in the Philadelphia area, focusing on the western suburbs.
