PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Western Pennsylvania’s popular convenience store chain is going digital.

Starting later this summer at select stores, Sheetz will accept digital currencies for in-store and gas payments via the network Flexa.

Customers can also link their My Sheetz Rewardz account to their Flexa-enabled apps to pay and earn store freebies.

“With interest in digital currencies reaching all-time highs, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that there are real, tangible benefits for the merchants who accept them,” Trevor Filter, co-founder of Flexa, said in a statement, “not only reduced fraud and cost savings, but also a better and more mobile customer experience.”

Pennsylvania-based Sheetz has more than 600 stores across the Mid-Atlantic region. While more popular in the western portion of Pennsylvania, there are some Sheetz locations in Reading, Kutztown, Bethlehem, Lancaster and Easton.

Sheetz is the first convenience store chain to accept digital currencies, which includes bitcoin, ether, litecoin, dogecoin and more.

Let’s see if the chain will give Philadelphia’s beloved Wawa a run for its money.
