TRENTON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A doctor with ties to Philadelphia is nominated as the next health commissioner in New Jersey.

Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill has picked Dr. Raynard Washington to oversee the department of health.

Washington comes back to the area from Mecklenberg, North Carolina, where he served as director of the health department in the county starting in 2021.

Prior to that, he was deputy health commissioner for the city of Philadelphia and he was also an adjunct professor at Temple University.

Washington thanked Sherrill for placing her trust in him and said he’s looking forward to working toward lowering costs and improving access to health care.
