HADDON HEIGHTS, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Saturday, September 25 is the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. To mark the occasion, the Camden County Prosecutors Office invited families of victims for their first-ever "Shine Their Light Walk."
As hard as it is to lose someone taken too soon, events like this help families realize they aren't suffering alone.
"He was just a beautiful soul. He was, he could light up a room," said Ashley Giancola of her brother Michael. The Collingswood resident lost him in a January 2 shooting. She said it helps to meet others who understand her pain.
"We're all mourning and grieving, and we all deserve this love together because we could become a big family and just be there for each other," she said.
Acting prosecutor Jill Mayer said last year the homicide solve rate was the highest it's ever been in Camden County. She wants the families of victims to know they are not forgotten.
"Our prosecutors and detectives eat, sleep, and breathe this," she said. "They do not let up. They want to be able to bring that peace of mind to the families because that's part of that healing process."
This is the first year of the walk, and according to County Commissioner Director Lou Cappelli, it won't be the last.
