PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Three people were shot just outside the emergency room entrance of Temple University Hospital in North Philadelphia early Thursday morning. Dozens of shots were fired — some of the bullets hitting the hospital building.
Around 12:30 a.m., police said a dark-colored, possibly blue, sedan was heading south on Germantown Avenue when three people in the car opened fire at three men standing on the sidewalk.
"One of the shooters may have exited the vehicle and fired shots. But we know over 40 shots were fired," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
An 18-year-old victim was hit in the hand, a 22-year-old was shot in the knee, and a 25-year-old was hit in the face, back and arm, police said. They managed to stay on their feet and run into the ER to get help. Police said the three victims are in stable condition.
Although the building was struck by gunfire, no one inside the hospital was hurt.
"A door was hit several times," Small added. "A piece of glass that leads to the walkway to the emergency room was also struck by gunfire and several other bullets did strike Temple Hospital property."
The emergency room remained open as police investigated the shooting outside. Police have not determined a motive.
