SPRING CITY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A five-hour standoff with police in Chester County ended early Tuesday morning with the armed suspect surrendering to police. Officials say 52-year-old Daniel Montalto Sr. barricaded himself inside his home on New Street, near Main Street, and fired shots periodically inside.

The Chester County's District Attorney's Office says Montalto was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and related offenses.

Officials say it started around 11 p.m. Monday when police responded to a domestic violence call. An officer arriving at the scene encountered an individual with physical injuries.

“He observed injuries to the victim that there was an assault that took place,” said Spring City Police Chief Ryan White.

Emergency responders were summoned, and when officers attempted to enter the home, a member of Montalto’s family stopped them, telling them he had a gun.

“So at that time, the officer cleared everyone from the immediate area,” said White.

Officers from Chester and Montgomery counties arrived, and a negotiator got involved, but the situation intensified.

“Different points at time throughout the incident, there were shots fired from within the home,” White said.

Officials say Montalto continued to periodically fire gunshots from within the residence until about 3:15 a.m., when he came outside and surrendered.

No one was shot. Investigators aren't sure if any shots were directed at police.

A reverse 911 call went out to nearby residents, alerting them to shelter in place. The order lasted from late Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is being asked to call  Chester County Detectives  or the Spring City Police Department.
