PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — This is the time of year when football begins, from youth sports to the pros. A new report in the New England Journal of Medicine addresses a concern: Should parents let their kids play American football?

As you might expect, there is not an explicit "yes" or "no" answer. The closest the article comes to an answer is when it says a parent is "right to consider the risk of head trauma" in making this decision.

There is no doubt that concussions can have a short-term and potentially long-term effect, and multiple concussions make the risks of long-term issues greater.

The authors stress that there should be education about the pros and cons as well as the proper teaching of techniques to avoid head trauma.
