PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The number of infants dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has gone down since 1992. This was the year when the Back to Sleep campaign began encouraging parents to have their babies positioned to sleep on their backs.
However, additional advancements have helped as well, including safe sleep surfaces, encouragement of breastfeeding and room sharing.
Nevertheless, there are still a disturbing number of SIDS cases. Some other important steps: Parents should avoid alcohol and tobacco, and make sure the infant does not have loose bedding.
