Media, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A new art exhibition launching on Jan. 12 in Media will dive headfirst into the creative expression of skateboard culture.
“We know in our community just how creative skating is not just as a sport but sort of bleeds over into the visual arts,” said Stacy Olkowski, founder of the Delco Skatepark Coalition, the curator of the new exhibit.
It’s called “Skate Scene: Art Inspired By Skate Culture,” and the exhibition will be on display at the Media Arts Council until Feb. 18. More than 100 art pieces created by more than 40 artists will be showcased.
“We have paintings, collages; we have videography, we have sculpture, we have some furniture pieces, [and] we have of course decorated skateboard decks,” said Olkowski.
Beyond the massive amount of art, there are also a number of different skate-related events planned throughout the exhibition’s run.
There will be a skate-themed Quizzo on Jan. 20, two skate deck design workshops for younger kids and teens on Jan. 21, and a night of live music and skate videos on Jan. 26.
Proceeds from the exhibition go to the artists involved, and the Delco Skatepark Coalition, which funds and builds ADA-accessible skate parks in Delaware County. They also advocate for inclusive skating spaces around the U.S.
“Skating is a very creative adventure and we’re really hoping to show off all the ways that branches out from the sport itself,” said Olkowski.
