SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Ethernell Saxon turned 100 years old on Wednesday — coincidentally, the same day she received her second shot of the COVID-19 vaccine.

When the Cherry Hill matriarch arrived at the Camden County Vaccination Center in Blackwood with her daughter, Cathy, they were greeted with a special presentation from county officials: balloons, 100 cupcakes and song.

“A whole gymnasium full of people singing happy birthday to her,” said Cathy, who also received her second dose. “It was just an awesome occasion.”

Ethernell, a great-great-grandmother, former teacher and nurse’s aide, has a huge love of family. Cathy said getting the vaccine is crucial for their family’s game plan.

“More people have died from COVID than we would even imagine, and more people of color have died,” she said. “We need to be around for the next generation.”

Like many families, it’s been challenging being apart. Cathy is grateful they are both on the road to be being better protected against the virus.

“Two weeks from now when I give her a hug, it’s going to be the greatest hug ever,” she said.
