PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For the fourth year running, an organization in Philly’s Indonesian community has turned its South Philly location into a haunted house for Halloweekend.
If you stroll down Broad Street right off the Tasker-Morris stop on the Broad Street Line, you will find Gapura, South Philly’s Indonesian Community Center. But this weekend it’s something totally different. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by jump scares and whispers.
“Each year, gonna be something new. Different ghost and different folklore that we have in Indonesia,” said Aditya Setyawan.
This year’s theme is Mahluk: Sandekala. In folklore, it’s when spirits come out at dusk, just before the moon rises. It gives you a tour of several spirits familiar to those native to one of Indonesia’s several thousand islands. Each island has its own spirit.
Gabby Jalil plays the spirit tour guide through the haunted house.
“It gets people a little bit engaged about the myths… whether or not they do remember, at least they have some sort of experience and see this culture as cool.”
The haunted house is open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.
