MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA (KYW Newsradio) — The Lower Merion School Board has chosen its next Superintendent of Schools.

The Board of School Directors says they interviewed numerous highly qualified candidates before selecting Steven Yanni, who’s served as Superintendent of Schools in the Upper Dublin School District since 2018.

The board said he’s a “visionary educational and thought leader who is committed to empowering students, staff and communities.”

Yanni will take the place of Megan Shafer who served as the district’s acting superintendent after former Superintendent Khalid Mumin was appointed education secretary by then Governor-elect Josh Shapiro.

Yanni says he is honored to have been selected for this position.

“I am eager to work with and on behalf of our students, staff, board, families and community as we reach new and higher levels of educational excellence in Lower Merion,” he said. “I look forward to building relationships based on trust, respect and collaboration as we create a bright future together.”

He plans to host multiple welcome events in the coming months to hear about people’s educational issues and concerns and to become more familiar with those within the community.

The board will vote on Yanni’s appointment on Tuesday. His anticipated start date is August 14.
