PHILADELPHIA(KYW Newsradio) —Street sweeping crews are back out for the season in Philly starting today, and they’re expanding the number of streets they’re cleaning compared to last year.
Eight of the 14 neighborhoods served by the city’s street sweeping initiative will see more crews out cleaning more streets. The expansion of cleaning will hit Frankford, Kensington, Strawberry Mansion and more.
Charles Jackson from Mayfair says the city’s street sweeping crews have come down his block for the last three or four years.
“It normally comes on Mondays, like almost every Monday, most Mondays,” he said.
He says the cleaning crews do a lot to help, but they’re only as effective as the weather allows them to be.
“It does good, but in my block, trash always blows everywhere,” Jackson said.
Monday was no different with the high winds.
Crews will work 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., four days a week, usually Mondays through Thursdays, unless there’s a holiday.
Residents will need to move their cars on certain streets slated for cleaning or get a ticket. The city is giving a reprieve this week on ticketing, but enforcement will begin next week.
Those who want to see when or if their block is cleaned can check the city website StreetSmartPHL.phila.gov to find a map of all the streets getting cleaned on any given day.
Crews will be out every week until October 29.
