PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — With back to school in New Jersey right around the corner, Subaru is helping teachers in the Camden City school district get ready.

Every teacher in grades 6-8 is getting $500 from Subaru to buy classroom supplies. Teachers there typically need to spend their own money to support their students.

“You’d be surprised. The basics,” said Camden City School District Superintendent Katrina McCombs. “Pens, pencils, glue, glue sticks, scissors, just the basics, crayons.”

McCombs believes this kind of support from a corporate partner with roots in the city really makes a difference.

“Even though every school in the district has a budget and receives supplies, there are special things our teachers like to do in the classrooms,” said McCombs. “And so this allows them to continue to be creative.”

Subaru’s headquarters is in Camden, and senior VP Alan Bethke says community engagement is a key part of the company’s mission. Bethke says they have donated more than $1 million in the past year.

“Our employees have volunteered more than 2,700 hours, again, just in the last year, to charity organizations in Camden,” said Bethke.

In all, the sponsorship covers about 90 classrooms and nearly 1,200 students.
