PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A family is questioning the disappearance of a Philadelphia teen who remains missing after swimming in the ocean during a school trip to Wildwood on Monday.
The father of 14-year-old Davoris Carter III said he does not understand why his son or other kids were allowed to go into the ocean. He said chaperones should have been paying more attention to the kids with special needs.
“My son should have not been in that water,” he told NBC10. “Nobody should have been in that water.”
Around 1:30 p.m., people noticed a group of swimmers in distress near Schellenger Avenue.
There were no lifeguards on duty at the time, so they flagged down a Wildwood police officer. Firefighters, police and beach patrol helped pull three of the swimmers out of the water. One was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Davoris remains missing.
The teen is a student at Delta School in Northeast Philadelphia. The school’s director told NBC10 that the students were appropriately supervised by an equal number of staff members.
