PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 14-year-old boy was shot inside a home Thursday night in North Philadelphia.

It happened around 6 p.m. near 17th and Jefferson streets, just a few blocks from Temple University’s campus.

The boy was with about 15 friends when he was shot. Chief Inspector Scott Small said it might have been an accident.

“We’re getting preliminary information that a group of teenagers, young adults, were handling a firearm and that firearm discharged, striking the 14-year-old,” he said.

The boy is recovering at the hospital.

According to Small, the suspected shooter is also 14 years old. He ran away after this happened, but police said they know who he is.

Small said the residence where the shooting happened is not the victim’s home, but he often goes there to visit.

Investigators are trying to get footage from surveillance cameras on 17th Street. They are also looking for the gun.
