PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 17-year-old is in critical condition after being shot on a SEPTA bus in Philadelphia Friday.
According to our newsgathering partners at NBC10, the shooting happened inside a bus with about 30 others a little after 6 p.m. near North 3rd Street and West Allegheny Avenue.
“The bus driver, in an effort to protect the lives of the individuals on the bus … continued to drive a couple of blocks more,” said Police Inspector D.F. Pace.
He says the bus driver relayed the information back to SEPTA Headquarters, who then called police, allowing nearby officers to quickly respond. No one else on the bus was injured, Pace says.
According to NBC10, the suspect fled the bus and got inside a stolen silver Hyundai.
Officers then saw a car that matched the description of the stolen car traveling at high speed and started to chase after it.
That car eventually crashed into a parked car at 5th Street and Glenwood Avenue. The driver of the Hyundai then got out and ran off but was stopped by officers and taken into custody.
A second person exited the car wearing a black puffy coat but took it off before running through a field. Police are still searching for that person.
Police also recovered a weapon in the area of 3rd and Allegheny outside a crab shack on the corner but it is unclear if it is connected to the shooting.
“We’re currently trying to piece together whether there was another shooting or in the sequence of events, there was a shooting outside the bus as well as inside the bus," Pace said.
Police are waiting for the bus to be repaired to get surveillance footage and hopefully paint a more clear picture of what happened.
Police urge anyone with information on this incident to contact the department's Shooting Investigations Group at 215-686-8270.
