PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two teenagers are in police custody after officers said they stole a car at gunpoint in the city’s Oxford Circle section and crashed a short time later in Frankford.
It was shortly before 11 p.m. Monday, according to authorities, when the two teens — one armed with a handgun and the other a knife, both wearing masks — pointed their weapons at two women, ages 32 and 37, on the 2100 block of Longshore Avenue, near Bustleton Avenue in Oxford Circle.
Police said the suspects, identified as 16-year-old Jayden West and 18-year-old Richard West, demanded the keys to the victims’ 2012 Jeep Cherokee, then fled in the vehicle.
Officers saw the Cherokee moments later and it sped off, eventually colliding with a pickup truck at Adams and Torresdale avenues in Frankford. Police said the suspects tried to flee on foot but were caught nearby. One was reportedly snared in barbed wire in a backyard fence.
The carjacking victims and the driver of the truck were not injured, and police said they recovered a handgun from inside the stolen car.
Both suspects face charges including robbery, aggravated assault, carjacking and fleeing police. Jayden West is being charged as an adult.
