PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are looking for the thieves who made off with a big chunk of change Wednesday night after breaking into an unmarked trailer with a cache of coins in Northeast Philadelphia.

Around 6 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a report of the theft in the parking lot of the Walmart on Byberry Road near Philadelphia Mills. A cargo truck that had been filled with $750,000 in dimes had been unbroken open, and a trail of hundreds of the coins lay scattered like glitter from the parking lot to Woodhaven Road.

The tractor-trailer driver had picked up the dimes from the Philadelphia Mint on Wednesday and was planning to transport them to Florida on Thursday, authorities said.

It's not clear how many people may have been involved in the theft or if they knew what the truck contained.

Authorities say the thieves apparently fled with at least $200,000. The full value is not yet known. And it's not clear how they carried off the mounds of money.

No arrests have been made.
