TRENTON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Investigators say a 3-year-old child has died after being shot shortly before noon on Wednesday.

The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office says that police believe the gunshot was self-inflicted and accidental in nature, according to broadcast partner NBC10.

Police say the child’s mother and an unidentified man were present. They have not publicly identified the child.

"Today, Trenton suffered a young child's death due to gunshot wounds in the home. The matter is currently under investigation," said Mayor Reed Gusciora in a statement released Wednesday afternoon.

"This horrific act calls to mind the senselessness of gun deaths and innocent children in harm's way. The city grieves for the family's loss, and we ask you to keep them in your prayers."

Officials say a gun was recovered, and an investigation is underway.
