CHESTER HEIGHTS, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A couple was found dead in their Delaware County home earlier this week, and police now believe they were killed in a double homicide.
Pennsylvania State Police identified the victims as Richard Zajko, 72, and Rita Zajko, 69. Investigators said the husband and wife had not been heard from, so they performed a welfare check at their single-family house on Highland Drive in Chester Heights around 5 p.m. on Monday. Officers found the couple dead.
“We weren’t home that day, and it makes you wonder, ‘Why that house?’” neighbor Dan Steinhaus said to NBC10.
State police did not say how the couple was killed. They also did not say if anything was stolen from their home or if there were any signs of a break-in.
Property records show the Zajkos have owned the house since 1987.
“The gentleman would always be cutting his grass or cleaning his yard. His yard was always great. And we would just wave to him in passing, and they were friendly,” Steinhaus said.
Police are asking anyone with information about this double homicide to call the Troop K Media Barracks at 484-840-1000.
Tips to the Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers can also be submitted anonymously at 1-800-4PA-TIPS (8477).
