PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An estimated 40 million Americans do not know how to swim, and more than half of American adults have never taken a swimming lesson. Men are significantly less likely to know how to swim than women.
Last year, 4,000 people drowned, but twice as many were left with severe impairment due to nonfatal drowning.
Access to swimming lessons and public education is crucial.
