CHESTER, P.A. (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Union is expanding its home on the Chester Waterfront. Now, next to Subaru Park is a new $100 million WSFS sports complex that Union President Tim McDermott said isn’t just for the pros.

This has been a long time in the making. We started this and kind of dreamed this vision back in 2019,” he said of the 170,000 square-foot facility. “A place that’s going to house our professional athletes, as well as a place that’s going to be open to the public and open to the Chester community.”

Team owner Jay Sugarman said the facility also helps the team take the next step on the pitch with some of its features. That includes indoor and outdoor soccer fields, state-of-the-art weight rooms, and a ‘striker’s lab.’

“Unlike anything else I think in the world, where we’re going to do high definition analysis of how our players strike the ball,” he said. “We’ve got an overseas company building us a super computer.”

There are also two basketball courts, six locker rooms, a private event space, and flex space for community use.

“This campus, this amazing all- in-one where our players, the community, all of our academy kids, can come together and we can really build from that,” said Sugarman.

As the region preps for the arrival of the World Cup summer, McDermott also anticipates a lot of countries will be making bids to use these new facilities next year when they’re in town.
