PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Alleem Borden, who was on the run for more than three days after escaping Philadelphia police custody, has been recaptured. U.S. marshals on Thursday said they tracked the 29-year-old to Johnstown, in Cambria County, about more than 200 miles away.
Borden was originally arrested on Sunday, accused of stealing a car. He complained of pain while in custody and was able to break free from officers after being discharged from Temple University Hospital’s Episcopal campus in Kensington.
On Tuesday afternoon, U.S. marshals checking on an address in West Philadelphia saw Borden bolt out the back door, and they lost sight of him when he jumped down an embankment and ran along some SEPTA tracks. That was the last time investigators saw him until his capture.
“Our task force investigators developed information Borden was picked up by two known Philadelphia associates Tuesday evening. And these individuals drove Borden directly to Johnstown, Pennsylvania.”
Clark said they believe he has connections in Johnstown and some familiarity with the area because of prior criminal activity there.
Thursday morning, a team of law enforcement officers investigated a property they thought Borden may have hid in. They didn’t find him, but Clark said investigators tracked him to another residence.
“At that time, we believe Borden reached out to another woman who had previous ties to Philadelphia.”
He went on to say they announced their presence at the property, and a woman permitted them to search, and she confirmed to them that Borden was inside the home. They found him in an attic crawl space.
Borden is being held in Cambria County, as he waits to come back to Philadelphia.
Borden is the second person to escape Philadelphia police custody on hospital grounds in a month’s time. In January, 17-year-old Shane Pryor slipped away from police after he was transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for a hand injury, sparking a five-day manhunt.
