PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — How can public transit in Chester be better? The city is getting advice from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The Chester Economic Development Authority (CEDA) recently received a grant from the national Thriving Communities Program, but it does not come with money. Instead, the grant offers technical assistance to help the city with transportation projects.
“That would allow us to build our capacity in the city of Chester to do transportation-related projects,” said Lisa Gaffney, CEDA deputy executive director.
Thriving Communities is part of the Biden-Harris administration’s “commitment to ensuring that all communities have an equal opportunity to benefit from federal infrastructure funding,” a press release says.
The program will help the city apply for money for infrastructure projects.
“We’re excited about bringing in outside people to help us with those types of projects, particularly putting in funding applications for federal money,” Gaffney said. “Everyone talks about all the federal money out on the street, but you have to be able to apply for those and administer those grants.”
The two-year tutelage will also help Chester officials better bridge their community, which is currently broken up by major roadways.
“We have a lot of pieces of the regional transit system that come through the city, so how do we make those more efficient?” she asked. “How do we make those systems really operate to help the residents of the city of Chester and our local businesses?”
