PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Starting Wednesday, workers at the Home Depot on Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia began voting on whether they will form the store’s first union.

Employees have the opportunity to vote on starting a union group they're calling “Home Depot Workers United.” They filed the petition to unionize in September, and aim to become the first fully-unionized Home Depot location in the U.S.

The Northeast Philly location employs 250 people.

The next vote is scheduled to take place on Saturday by secret ballot through six different sessions under the supervision of the National Labor Relations Board. Home Depot Spokesperson Margaret Smith said the final decision will be made that night.

“We respect the right to unionize. We just don’t believe it’s the best solution for our associates,” said Smith.

“We want to assure all associates that they can bring concerns directly to leadership, and have a track record of working successfully with our associates to resolve them.”

There was no initial word on when a final decision would be announced.
