PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists are drugs designed to help fight diabetes by helping the body make more insulin. They also curb hunger and have become popular in weight loss drugs.
In response to reports that suicidal actions or thoughts in teens might increase while taking these drugs, the FDA has studied the use in adolescents. Instead of discovering that the suicide risk increased, researchers found that suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts went down.
More studies are underway to look at why there is a protective effect and potential benefits for patient care.
