PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Back in the 1980s, one of the first 50-and-over communities, called Leisure World, was formed in California. It was very popular and as part of the purchase paperwork, 14,000 people filled out surveys looking at their health and lifestyle habits.
Years later, a neurologist made it her mission to track the people down and follow up on how they were doing. The 90-plus study was born, and it is still in existence at the University of California, Irvine.
Some key findings: People who were slightly overweight in their 70s tended to live longer than those who weighed less. Those who socialized and had friends consistently lived longer. And, any form of 45-minute-a-day exercise — broken up into shorter intervals — was associated with longer life.
