NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A man in federal prison for child sex trafficking has been charged with murdering his cellmate in Fairton, New Jersey.
Investigators said they found 39-year-old William Vontrail Johnson’s cellmate unresponsive at the Federal Correctional Institution and lying in a pool of blood on March 4, 2025. Officials issued lifesaving measures to the cellmate until he was taken to a hospital, where he died the next day.
Officials said an autopsy report found the man died from puncture wounds to the head, neck, and chest. They ruled it a homicide.
Johnson told FBI Special Agents that he first tried to choke his cellmate to death, and when he felt he was dead, he let him go, but the man started to breathe again, and that’s when Johnson “tried to kill him in all kinds of ways” — stabbing him with a pencil through the eye.
Johnson was serving a sentence for child sex trafficking from the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma.
Johnson faces a lifetime in prison if convicted and a fine of up to $250,000.
