PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The William Way LGBT Community Center will say goodbye to its historic home at 1315 Spruce Street next month.
The aging building needs at least $3.5 million in repairs. So far, the center has not been able to raise the necessary funds.
“It costs more to repair the building than the actual value of the building,” said Darius McLean, the center’s acting executive director.
He said programs will take place at the Church of Saint Luke and the Epiphany.
McLean said they are still looking for a temporary space for archives, arts and culture,
The center will officially close its doors on Dec. 18. To honor the space, memories and milestones built within those walls, the center will host “One Last Dance” on Dec. 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It’s free, but they say donations are appreciated.
“That community and sense of belonging isn’t going anywhere,” McLean said.
