PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Snow, sleet and freezing rain hit the region on Thursday, and officials warn that could lead to hazardous driving conditions.
A winter weather advisory was in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday. Mixed precipitation could result in snow and sleet accumulations up to an inch in some areas and icy roads throughout southeastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey and Delaware.
Drivers should plan on slippery road conditions for the morning commute and are advised to slow down and use caution while traveling. The latest road conditions can be found by calling 511.
Winter driver checklist
✔ Start with a full tank of gas.
✔ Bring along a collapsible shovel and a bag of salt or kitty litter.
✔ Allow for extra time.
✔ Slow down.
✔ Increase following distances.
✔ Pay attention to on-ramps and off-ramps.
AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson Jana Tidwell said drivers should always go into a winter weather event with a full tank of gas. Bring along a collapsible shovel and a bag of salt or kitty litter to allow better tire traction should you get stuck. And, allow for extra time.
"What could be sleet and freezing rain in one area could be snow in another, could be a lot of ice in another. So pay attention, give yourself plenty of extra time,” Tidwell said.
Drivers should reduce speeds and be cautious, added PennDOT spokesperson Robyn Briggs.
"Know that bridges and ramps do freeze faster than your normal roadway that is touching the ground,” Briggs said. “Be on the lookout for if you see any wetness on the roadway. The road temperatures — and it’s really cold outside — that could turn into black ice that you necessarily can’t see."
More than 400 snow-removal trucks were out on roads Wednesday night. PennDOT started brining operations on Tuesday.
PennDOT began with 110,000 tons of salt this season, and about 44,000 tons have been used so far.
