PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia woman has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a man in Ardmore in June. Investigators say the incident followed a bar fight earlier that night.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele and Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael McGrath announced the arrest on Tuesday of Renee DiPietro, 70. They say she stabbed Michael Sides, 31, after he was involved in a fight with her son, on June 10.

When Lower Merion Township police responded to reports of a stabbing at the intersection of Cricket Avenue and Cricket Terrace after 1:30 a.m., officers found Sides on the ground with a chest wound.

Investigators discovered the stabbing was related to a bar fight earlier that night involving the suspect’s son, Jason DiPietro, and a friend of Sides.

They say surveillance video from a nearby business shows Sides following Jason from the bar to a car. The video shows Sides physically assault the man.

Then his mother, Renee DiPietro, can be seen getting out of the car to join the fight and stabbing Sides with a 16-inch blade that had been sheathed in a cane.

The video shows her afterward striking the victim again while he is lying on the ground.

Sides was transported to Lankenau Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Renee DiPietro turned herself in and now faces charges of third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and possessing an instrument of crime.

A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 22.
