PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — As we near the one-year anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war, three Philadelphia-area chefs are teaming up again to cook for a cause.
On March 28 at 6 and 8 p.m., Olga Sorzano, Michael Strauss and Joncarl Lachman will be hosting Dine at Dankbaar for World Central Kitchen at Dankbaar, Lachman’s newest restaurant on East Passyunk Avenue.
While Lachman opened the restaurant with intentions of bringing back “BYOB date nights” post-COVID-19, he said he wants to take part in this event to give back and help those in need. All proceeds will benefit World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit that provides meals in times of crises.
Almost a year ago, Lachman flew to Poland with Sorzano, founder of the kombucha vinegar brand Baba’s Acid Trip as well as Baba’s Bucha, and Strauss, of Mike’s BBQ, to donate their time and culinary skills to World Central Kitchen for eight days.
Sorzano said being there in the height of everything that was going on was surreal and heartbreaking.
“This event is our way of raising awareness for the war that is still going on,” Sorzano said. “I’m looking forward to collaborating with two like-minded chefs to create a memorable evening for attendees and raise funds for World Central Kitchen.”
The chefs will spend the night whipping up a four-course menu of themed dishes, including rabbit rilette, Ukrainian mules with Baba’s Acid Trip kombucha, smoked beef short ribs, and spiced pickled pear pavlova.
Lachman hopes the money raised will help continue feeding Ukrainians.
“Because this is still going on and it’s actually probably worse than it was before,” he said.
“I think the inspiration is in trying to give back. …When you do something like that, you meet so many people. The people I met there were so inspiring and I feel like I wanna kinda use this space, partially, to do good.”
The chefs say space is limited, with only 25 tickets available for each seating. Tickets and more information can be found here.
Editor's note: The event, originally set for March 7, has been rescheduled to March 28.
