The Padres earned their most exciting win of the year on Thursday night, defeating the Rockies 7-3 in 12 innings to kickoff this homestand. Both teams scored a run in the 3rd inning, and failed to score again through 9, sending the game to extra innings. The Rockies plated a run in the top of the 10th and 11th innings, and the Padres responded each time with a lone run of their own. Luis Campusano delivered a clutch 2-out RBI-single in the bottom of the 11th to keep the Padres' hopes alive. The Padres finally held the Rockies off the board in the top of the 12th inning, with Jake Cronenworth gunning down Willi Castro at the plate and Campusano applying the tag on a bang bang play. In the bottom of the 12th, Fernando Tatis Jr. laid down a sac-bunt to move Cronenworth over to 3rd base with 1 out. The Rockies then made the interesting strategic decision to issue intentional walks to both Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado, loading the bases with 1 out for Xander Bogaerts. Bogaerts made the Rockies pay, blasting a no-doubt-about-it grand slam over the left field wall to send the Friar Faithful home happy. Walker Buehler will start for the Padres on Friday as they debut their new City Connect uniforms.
