Spirit Airlines flight diverted after passenger attempts to open exit door mid-flight

An unruly passenger caused a Spirit Airlines flight headed to Los Angeles to divert on Wednesday.

The flight, which took off from Cleveland, was forced to land in Denver after a passenger allegedly tried to open an emergency door midair.

"Spirit Airlines flight 185 diverted to Denver on the way to Los Angeles due to a passenger who appeared to attempt to open an exit door," Spirit Airlines told WJW-TV.

In a passenger-shared video, passengers aboard Spirit Airlines Flight 185 were seen restraining a man near the exit door along with crew members.

Per NBC Los Angeles, a passenger who chose to remain anonymous, said that the man came out shirtless from the bathroom and tried to open the door.

The passenger was removed from the aircraft in Denver.

The flight then continued to Los Angeles International Airport.

Another passenger video revealed the man was taken by paramedics on a gurney upon arrival in Denver. He was accompanied by a TSA officer.

The man was not immediately identified.

It’s unclear what prompted the in-flight disruption, however, Spirit Airlines noted that none of the flight’s passengers were harmed during the incident, per Newsweek.

“It is important to note that opening a door inflight is impossible due to air pressure inside the cabin pinning the door against its frame with force stronger than any person could ever overcome,” the airline wrote.

“Safety is our number one priority at Spirit Airlines. Law enforcement met the aircraft in Denver and took the passenger into custody. We thank the crew members and Guests who assisted for handling this situation quickly prior to arrival,” they added.
