Instagram will begin offering paid subscription services for creators

The simple things in life are never free. This age-old adage could soon be true for the social media site Instagram, which announced it is launching a trial of its new subscription service.

The service will allow for users to get extra content from creators as long as they are willing to fork over their extra cash, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The new subscription service comes in an effort to get more people to Instagram's site, as social media companies have been working to drive traffic on their platforms.

The feature was made public on Wednesday in the U.S. on a limited basis, and Instagram's parent company, Meta Platforms Inc., said it would add new ways for creators to make money from their followings.

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, shared with the Journal that top creators on the social media platform do what they do to make a living and this might help make it a more stable gig.

"Subscriptions are one of the best ways to have a predictable income—a way that's not attached to how much reach you get on any given post, which is inevitably going to go up and down over time," Mosseri said.

Mosseri added that the subscription model will start small and continue to grow as the year progresses, with the goal being that subscriptions are available across the entire platform.

Now users will be able to subscribe to a creator for exclusive content from their Instagram Stories, and Instagram lives.

According to Meta, Instagram will not collect fees from creators until 2023 at the earliest. As for pricing, subscriptions will range from $0.99 to $99.99, the Journal reported.

The new service comes as Facebook and Twitter have both launched subscription-based models within the last two years.

Meta even announced last year that it would pay more than $1 billion to content creators through 2022, the Journal reported.

Now, Mosseri will look to add new features to aid creators, saying that is one of the platform's top priorities for 2022, and another is working on a social media site for teens.
